Install on Shopify
Add ShopAssist from the Shopify App Store, activate the app embed in your theme and let signed-in customers ask about their orders.
Requirements
- Shopify (Admin API): >=2026-07
- A Shopify plan with Online Store 2.0 or a vintage theme (app embeds work on both).
- A staff account allowed to install apps. ShopAssist asks only for the permissions it needs; optional permissions (cancellations, returns, discount codes, newsletter sign-up sync) are requested later from the app when you switch those features on.
Install
Typical setup: About 2 minutes
1.Add the app from the Shopify App Store
Open ShopAssist in the Shopify App Store and click Add app. You are never asked for your myshopify domain.
2.Approve the permissions
Shopify shows the data ShopAssist needs (products, inventory, locations, orders for signed-in customers). Approve to install; the app opens in your Shopify admin.
3.Activate the app embed in your theme
In the setup screen, click Activate in theme editor. The theme editor opens with the ShopAssist app embed selected; switch it on and click Save.
You never type your myshopify domain: Shopify opens ShopAssist inside Shopify admin after you approve the permissions, and the app creates your ShopAssist account, store and billing on the first open.
Connect
There is nothing else to connect. The first sync starts automatically, and the setup checklist in the app walks you through the AI model, the app embed, your knowledge sources and the plan. Plans for Shopify stores are billed by Shopify on your Shopify invoice (Shopify billing).
Already have a ShopAssist account on the website (for example as an agency)? Open Settings → Link account in the app to get a claim code, and enter it in the dashboard under Add store → Shopify → Already installed?.
Verify
- In the theme editor, App embeds → AI chat assistant is switched on and saved.
- Your storefront shows the launcher (open it in a private window to see what shoppers see).
- In the app, Home shows "Widget seen on your store".
Signed-in customers
Signed-in customers are recognised automatically through the Shopify App Proxy (/apps/shopassist), so the assistant can answer "where is my order?" without asking for an order number. You don't need to configure anything.
If you changed the app proxy URL under Settings → Apps → ShopAssist, enter the same path in the app embed's App proxy path setting.
Known Shopify issue with new customer accounts
On some stores using new customer accounts, Shopify does not pass the signed-in customer to app proxies. ShopAssist then offers a Verify it's you button that signs the shopper in through a Shopify popup, or verifies a single order with a code sent to the order's email. Nothing is required from you.
See Shopify identity for details.
Stock per location
Stock per location comes from Shopify locations natively. Choose which locations shoppers may see in Catalog → Locations. Opening hours can be entered in ShopAssist or read from the location metafield custom.opening_hours. See multi-location stock.
Updating
The app updates itself. The app embed always loads the current widget; you never update theme code.
Uninstall and data removal
Uninstall the app in Settings → Apps and sales channels. Shopify removes the app embed, and the widget disappears at once. Your data is kept for 30 days in case you reinstall; Shopify's shop data deletion request (sent 48 hours after uninstall) then removes your store's data. See uninstall and data removal.
